People with disabilities deserve a higher level of autonomy than what is
currently afforded to them. All people want to become independent in
their daily lives, exercising self-determination in decisions both large
and small. This desire has given birth to Perpetual Motion Design, a
company that will enhance the freedom of people with disabilities
through intelligent and efficient product design. PMD's mission is to
develop custom adaptive equipment for its clients, involving them
directly in the design process. This will both help create equipment
that directly addresses the individual needs of the client, as well as
brings new and innovative ideas to PMD that can potentially benefit
other customers. As part of its goal of increasing its clients' autonomy, PMD will also teach its clients how to perform basic maintenance and repairs to their own equipment. Learning to do so will help to increase independence and provide an alternate solution to the long waiting periods associated with many durable medical equipment repair shops.
Biographies
Founder and CEO- Hollis Shostrom: Hollis has had a strong interest in design and manufacturing for much of his life. While attending high school in Ashland, OR, he won the state championship in model bridge building four years in a row. During the same period of time, dissatisfied with the products available on the market, Hollis started designing his own adaptive equipment to meet his own specific needs. This desire to create products to enhance his own independence soon grew into a passion to help others to do the same, and his vision for what is now PMD was born.
Friend of PMD- Steve Belzer: Steve met Hollis in the Summer of 2007, and they became fast friends. When Hollis shared his vision with him, he knew that he had to get involved somehow. He spent his free time in between working and going to school assisting Hollis in whatever ways he was able- from facilitating communication over the phone and in person, and taking dictation to help Hollis write his business plan and emails. Steve currently resides in Portland, OR where he attends the School of Nursing at the University of Portland.
